Connecting Box

Copy approved documents into a folder in your Box account automatically or on demand, and keep every re-push as a new version of the same Box file.

Connect Box from Integrations to copy approved documents into a folder in your Box account. Box sync is part of the Professional and Enterprise plans, and only an admin can connect it. For everything docEvault connects to, see Integrations.

Scope

Box doesn't offer an app-only folder the way Dropbox does, so connecting asks Box for read and write access to your Box account. docEvault only ever creates folders and files inside the folder set in Configure. It doesn't open, change or delete anything else.

If your firm uses Box Enterprise, your Box admin may have to approve docEvault before anyone can connect it.

Where files go

Files land under the folder set in Configure (docEvault at the top of your Box account unless you change it), then one folder per contact and one per request: docEvault / Jane Doe / 2025 Tax Return / W-2.pdf. docEvault creates any of those folders that don't exist yet.

If a file with the same name is already in that folder, the new one is saved as W-2 (1).pdf, W-2 (2).pdf and so on. Nothing already in Box gets overwritten.

What gets copied, and when

Only approved documents. Files still under review or rejected aren't copied, so the folder reflects what you've accepted.

  • Auto-sync. Turn it on in Configure and each file is copied a few seconds after you approve it.
  • Push to Box. Open the ⋯ menu on an approved file to copy it yourself. The item reads Push to Box Again once the file is already there. Use it for files approved before you connected, or to retry one that failed.

Pushing a file that's already in Box adds a new version of that Box file instead of a second copy, so Box's version history keeps the earlier one. If you renamed the file in docEvault since, or someone moved or deleted the copy in Box, the push saves a fresh copy under the current name instead.

Checking that a file arrived

Once Box is connected, each approved file on a request shows in Box or Box copy failed next to its size and upload time. Hover over it to see where the file went or what went wrong. The Box card under Integrations shows when a file was last copied.

Each Push to Box is also recorded in the request's Activity feed, with where the file went and who pushed it (or why it failed). Automatic copies aren't listed there; the file's in Box mark shows those. Your client doesn't see these entries.

If some files on a request fail, whoever approved them gets a notification. Open the request and use Push to Box on those files to try again.

If the connection stops working

If docEvault can no longer reach your Box, org admins get one Box Needs Reconnecting notification. The Box card turns red and shows a Reconnect Box button. This usually happens because someone removed docEvault from the apps connected to your Box account, or your Box admin withdrew approval. Until you reconnect, nothing is copied. Files approved in the meantime show Box copy failed and need pushing again after you reconnect.

docEvault keeps the connection fresh on its own, so it doesn't lapse just because your firm went a few weeks without approving anything.

Disconnecting

Disconnect removes docEvault's access on Box's side too, not just in docEvault. Files already copied stay in your Box. They're yours. If Box doesn't confirm the disconnect, docEvault tells you. You can then remove docEvault yourself from the apps listed in your Box account settings.

On the Easy Start plan

Easy Start can't connect Box. If your firm moves from Professional to Easy Start while connected, syncing pauses: nothing new is copied and Push to Box disappears. You can still disconnect. Upgrade again and syncing resumes from the next approval. Push any files approved while it was paused to catch up.

Encrypted organizations

With zero-knowledge encryption on, auto-sync isn't available because the server can't decrypt your files. Push to Box still works: it decrypts the file in your browser and uploads it from there. The copy in Box is therefore readable, and it's protected by Box's security rather than docEvault's encryption.

Using more than one storage service

You can connect Box alongside Dropbox or Google Drive. Each approved file is then copied to each one, and the request page shows a status for each.

When it's worth using

Connect Box if your firm files its documents in Box and uses docEvault to collect them. It saves downloading and re-filing every completed request.

If you'd rather pull files down in bulk when a request finishes, Download all may suit you better.
